In February 1990, the SIGMA MU LAMBDA - the Society of Music Lovers of the School of Music and Fine Arts held a Valentine Songwriting Contest. It was a simple activity which drew eight entries from music students, all of which of course - reached the finals. The final contest was held at the Music Sala with only a grand piano as accompaniment. Prizes amounted at P300.00 only. The Valentine Songwriting Competition was attended by only few students, most of them were music students. The winner of the first place was “It’s Hard To Find Someone Like You”, written by Casmelyn Joy Quicoy. The second place went to “Valentine Forever” by Ma. Rosario Mercado. Noel Acosta and Fely Binanua tied for 3rd place.

The Valentine Songwriting Competition of 1991 to 2000 became more spectacular, and were opened to non-music students. Prizes were raised to a total of P14,000.00. Top singers in the campus were invited to interpret the songs and a live band was organized to perform with them at the Luce Auditorium.
